The Anaheim Ducks have been a consistent playoff team for the past half-decade. They won the NHL’s Pacific Division five seasons in a row and finished second behind the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18. The Ducks won their only ever Stanley Cup back in 2007 but their contention window is still open.

The team has been built around Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, two veteran all-stars who were young depth players on the team’s 2007 Cup team. Getzlaf remains one of the game’s best two-way playmakers, but Perry has become a bit of an albatross with his large cap hit. Along with those two, Ryan Kesler forms a trio of expensive, veteran forwards on the Ducks. Kesler, who is one of the league’s best two-way forwards when healthy, could be shut down for the entirety of the 2018-19 season due to lingering issues. He missed the first few months of last season and his absence created a large hole in Anaheim’s lineup.

The team’s strength at this point is a deep, young blueline. At the top are offensive dynamo Cam Fowler and the deeply underrated Hampus Lindholm. Josh Manson is quickly evolving into an elite shutdown defender and Brandon Montour is following Fowler’s lead as an excellent quarterback who can produce offence. All four of these solid defenders are under the age of 27 and are signed for at least two more seasons.

Given their tight salary cap situation and crop of youngish players in need of new deals the next few years, the Ducks were largely inactive this summer in the free agent market. They made a couple of depth additions like Anton Rodin, Andrej Sustr, and Luke Schenn, but none are game-changers.

The Ducks’ biggest move of the off-season was handing out a shockingly large contract to goalie John Gibson. The Ducks gave Gibson an eight-year extension that will begin in 2019-20 worth $6.4 million annually. The length of that deal is generally unheard of for goalies, but Gibson and his .926 save percentage was key to Anaheim’s success last season.
