The Winnipeg Jets came back in the NHL for the 2011- 2012 season two decades after the original franchise relocated to Arizona. Their franchise moved from Winnipeg to Phoenix in 1996. Since their comeback the closest they have been to the Stanley Cup was last season (2017/18) where they placed 2nd in the Central Division.

The team is evenly balanced based on strength. The power forwards of the Jets are Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine. Scheifele is highest paid player on the Winnipeg Jets at 6.1 million. Wheeler had the most points within the Winnipeg Jets in the 2017/18 season at 91 points with Patrik Laine following at a 70-point season. Laine finished with 71 goals as a teenager putting him under just under Crosby.

The Winnipeg Jets blueline is tall and heavy with players such as Byfuglien, Trouba and Myers. Byfuglien is known to get into players heads with his intimidating presence at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds. Not only is he a veteran defenseman, but he manages to put up a steady number of points in the last 5 years. Since early last year goaltender the Jets re-signed Hellebuyck to a one-year contract worth $2.25 million. In the 2017–18 Jets season, Hellebuyck posted a 44–11–9 record in 67 games, setting the record for the most single-season wins by an American goaltender in the NHL, previously held by Tom Barrasso of the 1992 title-winning Pittsburgh Penguins. If Hellebuyck can continue to be a reasonable number one starting goaltender the Winnipeg Jets should be able to make it further, or even all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Another big question surrounding the Jets is who will replace Paul Stastny on the second line since his recent deadline trade to the St. Louis Blues?

This year defenseman Morrissey is an RFA. If Jets were to sign him at $6 million with a long-term contract that would leave the Jets with plenty to spend to tie down pending RFAs Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor. As of September 4th, 2018, the Winnipeg Jets GM signed team captain Blake Wheeler Monday to a five-year contract extension worth $41.25 million, which works out to just over 8 million a year. Wheeler was heading into the final year of his current deal and unrestricted free agency next summer. With his new cap hit, Wheeler is set be the Jets highest-paid player in 2019-20, sitting above Dustin Byfuglien’s $7.6 million. To put his contract in perspective, over the past two to three seasons players such as Steven Stamkos, Ryan Johansen, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Logan Couture have signed contracts that carry cap hits around the $8 million range. Wheeler passed all of them all in points per game in the season. For scoring, Wheeler has all of those players beat as well, except for one, Steven Stamkos which is tied with Wheeler at .99 points per game.
