The Colorado Avalanche aren’t a playoff team. Last season (2018/19) was the first time since 2013/14. Both times getting knocked out first round.

Colorado’s captain Nathan MacKinnon had an NHL career-high 97 points (39 goals, 58 assists) in 74 games in 2017-18. He had nine multigoal games (tied for first in NHL). MacKinnon finished fifth in the NHL in points and second in points per game behind Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers. MacKinnon plays with 21-year-old, Mikko Rantanen and racking 84 points (29 goals, 55 assists) in 81 games. He shaped one of the best fantasy duos with MacKinnon on the first line, where they combined for 51 team goals, ending up second in the NHL. This was Rantanen’s breakout season, since 2016/17 he only accumulated 38 points throughout the season. Colorado fans can only hope that he keeps this up because it only helped them make the playoffs which they want to see once again.

Patrik Nemeth was off to a great start in the 2017/18 season, he had one of the NHL’s best plus-minus for a defenseman. Nemeth hurt the shoulder in a fight with former Dallas Stars teammate Tyler Seguin. Nemeth may not be back in time for the 2018/19 season because he needed surgery during the offseason.

Another key defensemen for Avalanche is Erik Johnson, but he has played fewer than 70 games in four of the past six seasons. He missed 18 regular-season games and all six playoff games in 2017-18 because of upper-body and knee injuries. He missed 36 games in 2016-17 with a broken leg and the final 34 games in 2014-15 with a knee injury that prevented him from playing in what would have been his first NHL All-Star Game. If Johnson and Nemeth can stay healthy for a whole season it will significantly help the Colorado Avalanche and might be able to push further in the playoffs.

As for Colorado’s goalies, General manager Joe Sakic said the Avalanche have two No. 1 goalies, Grubauer and Semyon Varlamov, who will compete for playing time. Since last season the Avalanche signed Grubauer, 26, in a trade from the Washington Capitals on June 22. The signing consists of a three-year contract. A backup for most of the past three seasons for Washington, Grubauer went 15-10-3 with a 2.35 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in 2017-18. Now, Varlamov, 30, is entering the final season of a five-year contract with Colorado. He has been terrific when healthy but has missed 94 games because of injuries and illnesses in the past four seasons after he was a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2013-14. He went 24-16-6 with a 2.68 GAA and .920 save percentage last season but missed 18 regular-season games because of injury and illness before missing all six games in the Western Conference First Round against the Nashville Predators with a knee injury. This is going to be a good test for both goalies, either Valamov becomes a backup for potentially his final season with Colorado or Grubauer remains a backup goalie for another team.
