Let’s change it from deadline day to deadline week, or month. It seems everything interesting has already happened, and incase you haven’t been paying attention, here’s a quick recap of who has been given a new home over the past three days.
Flyers trade D Kimmo Timonen to the Blackhawks for a 2nd round draft pick in 2015, and a conditional draft pick in 2016. The 2016 draft pick is a 4th rounder, but if the Hawks win two playoff rounds and Timonen plays in 50 per cent of the games, it becomes a 3rd rounder.
This was a tough one for Flyers fans to swallow. Timonen had missed the entire season, and while many were expecting him to be traded, they hoped they would see him suit up for the Flyers one last time. Ron Hextall opted not to risk anything and went with the deal the Hawks gave him. This deal doesn’t hurt Chicago’s cap crunch at all, as they take on a $0.828 cap hit in Timonen, who is a UFA at the end of the season.
Hurricanes trade D Tim Gleason to the Capitals for D Jack Hillen and a 3rd round draft pick in 2015.
Didn’t the leafs just buy Gleason out a couple years ago? I mean, he’s still counting for $0.833 million against their cap, yet the Canes managed to get a couple of assets for him. I guess his new $1.20 million cap hit this year was a lot more attractive than the $4.00 million cap hit he had with the Leafs. The Caps will be on the hook for $0.277 million and then he becomes a UFA.
The Ducks trade F Dany Heatley and a 3rd round draft pick in 2015 to Florida for F Tomas Fleischmann
Maybe Dany Heatley can get his career back together in Florida, but this is more of a cap dump than anything. The Ducks take on Flash and his $1.040 million cap hit for the remainder of the season while the Panthers get Heatley, who will cost them next to nothing.
Arizona trades F Antoine Vermette to Chicago for D Klas Dahlbeck and a 1st round draft pick in 2015
The Haws finally get that second line centre they’ve been looking for and the Coyotes do themselves a favour in the McDavid sweepstakes. Vermette has 13 goals and 35 points facing tough competition on an awful team in Arizona, and he won’t hurt the Hawks’ long term cap situation as he’s a UFA this summer.
Flames trade F Curtis Glencross to Washington for a 2nd round draft pick in 2015 and a 3rd round draft pick in 2015
The Flames managed to acquire assets for the declining and soon to be UFA forward, Curtis Glencross that they may be able to use before the deadline to bolster the team’s playoff push. Glencross will cost the Capitals $0.576 million for the rest of the year, and like I said, will be a UFA this summer. See a theme here?
Rangers trade D John Moore, F Anthony Duclair, a conditional 1st round draft pick in 2016, and a 2nd round draft pick in 2015 to Arizona for D Keith Yandle, D Chris Summers, and a 4th round draft pick in 2015. Arizona will retain 50 per cent of Yandle’s remaining salary.
The move of the day! The Rangers are going all in on the playoff push, while, like I mentioned earlier, the Coyotes are all in on the McDavid sweepstakes. They give up their stud defenceman for a couple of high picks, a solid young defenceman in Moore, and a forward who looked really, really good playing with Max Domi in the World Junior’s this year. The Rangers get Yandle, who has one more year left until he’s a UFA, and he’ll only cost them $2.625 million because Arizona is eating half his salary. The Rangers also signed Mats Zuccarello to a 4-year, $18 million contract extension.
Rangers trade Lee Stempniak to Winnipeg for F Carl Klingberg, Sharks trade F James Sheppard to Rangers for a 4th round draft pick in 2016
The Rangers just kept going absolutely nuts with their trades yesterday, sending Lee Stempniak to the Jets, then throwing a 4th round pick to the Sharks for James Sheppard. Does this mean the Sharks are BLOWING IT UP?! Our friends at Jets Nation go into detail about the acquisition of Stempniak.
Red Wings trade D Mattias Backman, F Mattias Janmark, and a 2nd round draft pick in 2015 to Dallas for F Erik Cole and a conditional 3rd round draft pick in 2015.
So basically, the Stars traded Erik Cole to the Red Wings for every single player than had named Matthias and a 2nd rounder. Cole is set to become a UFA at the end of the season and will cost Detroit $1.016 for the rest of the year.
